Perfect Scents To Sell Your House: Home Staging Tidbit

Perfect Scents to Sell Your House, Meagen Mackenzie, Okotoks Real Estate, Homes For Sale in Okotoks, realtors in Okotoks

Picture this: You're a homebuyer on the hunt to buy a new house. Your real estate agent has scheduled five back to back showings for this afternoon. You've just pulled up to house #3. It looks nice, great curb appeal; looks promising.

You enter the home. While you're taking off your shoes, you notice a musty smell. A combination of stale food odours and stale air.

You politely follow your real estate agent through the house as she points out all the attributes the home offers and while these are all very nice features, you just can't stop thinking about that awful smell.

Later, when you finish viewing the last house, your agent asks what you think of the houses you viewed. You review each one and when you come to house #3, the first thing you remember is how bad the house smelled.

This is very common. Not just in houses, but with everything. Scents or the reminder of a scent can trigger passed memories, whether good or bad.

Have you ever met or hugged someone and you could smell their perfume or cologne and you immediately thought of another friend who wears the same scent?

Or perhaps you walk passed a flower that gives off a scent of a place you travelled in the passed - perhaps the same flower grew in a passed travel destination.

Smell is connected to our memories and potential buyers will remember an unpleasant smelling house when they're weighing the pros and cons on a potential property.

Now, the same scenario could happen if a seller over-scents a house. Perhaps they've used a few scented plug-in's  on each level. While the scent may be nice, it can be overpowering which will leave a buyer wondering what the seller is trying to cover up.

So it's very important that your home is nicely but not overly scented for showings and this week's tidbit offers a few ways to do just that.

I'm a huge fan of frugal, all natural, non-toxic ways to care and maintain my home. Do you have any suggestions for scenting your home that fit into this category? Share them below so we can all have beautifully scented homes without the toxicity of store bought products.

As always, I welcome your comments, questions and suggestions.
